Short Film – Poetic Preaching

This was a short film directed and written by Ethan Sandes that follows a loner who grows infatuated with a woman and increasingly creates delusions for himself reminiscent of Russian Victorian literature in which he believes that their fictional dynamic is akin to the romance in said novels. This unfortunately evolves into a kidnapping plot where the protagonist decides to forcibly bring her to the mountains to profess his life for her. She thankfully rejects his proposal, shatters his delusions instantly and returns to her normal life that has been aggressively and disturbingly interrupted by this obsessive figure.

The film was entirely shot in black and white to capture a vintage aesthetic that was desired as part of this short film’s dissection on Victorian nostalgia and artificiality created by the forcing of antiquated works into a modern context. This proponent of the short film was readily apparent in the ending sequence in which both of the characters wear formal clothes to replicate the romanticist aesthetics associated with Victorian literature.
